Dr. Mark Ettensohn specializes in the treatment of narcissism and related disorders.
He is the author of Unmasking Narcissism: A Guide to Understanding the Narcissist in Your Life, a book that has helped individuals worldwide learn to cope and communicate more effectively.
He’s often asked why he chose to specialize in narcissism. Narcissism is a fortress built around deep emotional wounds. Whether the fortress is functioning well or falling apart, all who struggle with narcissism carry the pain of loss for an authentic life never lived. Helping people uncover that grief and take the hard steps toward uncovering their true self gives his work meaning.
Nevertheless, narcissism remains one of the few mental health issues that is still openly mocked, derided, and equated with “evil.”
Dr. Ettensohn is a passionate advocate for revising our scientific and cultural understanding of narcissism. He presented his recent paper Toward a More Accurate and Compassionate Model of Pathological Narcissism at the 2019 Western Psychological Association conference. Additionally, his presentation on the relationship between narcissism and suicide at the Sacramento Valley Psychological Association’s 2017 Annual Conference highlighted the need for clinicians to recognize that narcissistic individuals are an at-risk and vulnerable population.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Ettensohn is involved in training and supervising new psychologists. He is the former Asst. Dean of Student Affairs at the California Northstate University College of Psychology, an APA accredited training program that he helped found. He is also the former Director of Clinical Training at the California School of Professional Psychology in Sacramento, CA – another APA accredited training program.
Currently, Dr. Ettensohn is an Ass. Professor of Psychology at California Northstate’s Doctor of Psychology program, where he teaches case conference and psychodynamic intervention courses.
Dr. Ettensohn also acts as an academic advisor, dissertation chair, and clinical supervisor to prelicensed psychological associates and clinical trainees.
